Cover: The First IUPAC International Conference on Bio‐based Polymer (ICBP 2003) was held at the RIKEN Institute in Saitama, Japan, from 12 to 14 November 2003. Bio‐based polymers include various synthetic polymers derived from renewable resources and CO 2 , biopolymers in nature, their derivatives, and their blends and composites. The conference covered microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates, poly(amino acid)s, synthesis and properties of bio‐based polymers, blends and composites of bio‐based polymer, biodegradable polymers and development, and commercial products of bio‐based polymers. This special issue illustrates the range of current research on bio‐based polymers.
