Ivany has been both a US Army major general and the president of the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He writes about his firsthand experience during the 1980s, while as an Army officer he worked with President Ronald Reagan. Ivany learned right away about Reagan's “most overlooked and impressive leadership qualities: his ability to relate to everyone he met.” He writes, “As authentic leaders,we should remember that a sincere smile, kind greeting, or timely inquiry can lead to a far greater impact than we can ever imagine. We may not be able to end a Cold War, but we will enhance the lives of those we serve and improve the organizations we lead.”
