The phrase “employee engagement” has become fashionable. Yet not many companies truly engage their employees to better serve customers and other stakeholders. Nelson provides “six strategies any leader can employ to move up the needle on engagement, while improving employee loyalty and performance.” They are, in Nelson's words: (1) create a clear and compelling direction, (2) provide honest and open communication, (3) involve employees in decision making, (4) increase employee autonomy and flexibility, (5) develop your team, and (6) recognize and reward high performance. Leaders, Nelson believes, “need to set the stage for their people to perform, and to unleash the greatness that is within each and every one of them.”
