A large‐scale research project by Smart, Street and Foster “discovered that three distinct things predict or explain leadership success.” They are priorities, what they refer to as ‘who,’ (the employees you hire for your organization), and relationships. “The products of these three variables,” they write, are what they have dubbed your “power score.” The research draws on such resources as their mentor Peter Drucker and Silicon Valley executive Maynard Webb. Baseline, bedrock traits like honesty are important, yet not sufficient by themselves. For instance, honesty matters, and most leaders are honest. However, this “is kind of like having lungs—necessary for leadership success but by no means sufficient.”
