Van Gorder writes of his long and winding path to president and CEO of Scripps Health, one that began in the early 1970s as a hospital security officer and later included becoming a policeman. This instilled an appreciation and a unique perspective for what happens on the front lines of an organization. Ten techniques for front‐line leadership are discussed, such as know your people, tell stories, and create a culture of advocacy. “The people around me,” he writes, “have made me successful—first and foremost, our front‐line staff. All I do as a leader is take care of our people so they can provide superior care for our patients.”
