More than a year after Nelson Mandela's death, the world has much to learn from his leadership, says South Africa–born Pietersen. Mandela's life and leadership style are described, and Pietersen delivers a crisp explanation of apartheid, which “robbed the black majority of their dignity by treating them as inferior human beings without the rights and privileges enjoyed by whites.” Three domains of integrated leadership are outlined: personal leadership, interpersonal leadership, and strategic leadership. He particularly emphasizes Mandela's remarkable mastery of self and “profound empathy,” which helped enable his transition from prisoner to president.
