The detection of portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has important implications for prognosis and treatment. Liver transplantation (LT) is contraindicated due to high rates of recurrence, and the presence of PVTT also informs choice of locoregional therapy. PVTT and other forms of macrovascular invasion figure into most of the major staging systems for HCC. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
