Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent chronic liver disease affecting at least a quarter of the world's population.1 Although NAFLD and its progressive form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), were once regarded as a problem of the developed Western countries, NAFLD and NASH are now well recognized as important and common causes of liver disease across the globe.
