Considering the tribology design theory of arbitrary intersecting line gear (AILG) is still a blank, the equivalent ellipsoid model of contact area of the AILG pair was built and then improved by 3 modification methods of line teeth profile. Based on the improved model, semiquantitative analyses of the relationship between the parameters of the AILG and the ratio of principal curvature radii of equivalent ellipsoid R x / R y were presented, and design criteria for the parameters of AILG based on elastohydrodynamic (EHL) point contact model were proposed. The results of the theoretical calculation and the optical EHL experiment proved that the modifications of teeth profile and the parameters design criteria for the AILG are conducive to improving its EHL performance.
