The image depicts a silicon photonic crystal nanocavity light emitting diode, which operates in the 1300–1600 nm wavelength range. The emission is based on defect luminescence. The optically active defects, shown in the inset, are created by hydrogen plasma treatment. The emission from these defects is strongly enhanced by the photonic crystal cavity. (Picture: A.
