Using data on foods as an example, this article will introduce $ the entity-relationship (E-R) approach as the basis for all information organization; $ database organization: relational databases, object-oriented databases, and frames; $ templates for the internal organization of documents; $ cataloging and metadata; $ knowledge organization systems (KOS): (faceted) classification schemes, taxonomies, ontologies, and thesauri; knowledge representation.
