Key points Drivers to communicate research beyond the academy are increasing, but tension exists between traditional and new scholarly formats. Removal of subscription barriers allows research to be accessed but does not make it accessible: language/tone/medium all play their part. Research that is clearly communicated and promoted increases engagement significantly in both peer and non‐peer audiences. To drive impact, creators and service providers need to work in partnership to extend the reach of the traditional scholarly record.
