In terms of performance and beam parameter product the latest solid‐state lasers have advanced into the domain of CO 2 lasers. This has increased the maximum piece thickness that can be welded. While the process parameters are comparable, however, the two laser technologies differ – depending on the feed rate – regarding penetration depth and weld quality. This is mainly due to the laser radiation being absorbed differently.
