A recent recommendation was made by the Hearing Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) as a minimal reporting standard for reporting hearing results. We have reviewed the recommendation and endorse it. The Laryngoscope will adopt the recommendation for all future publications that report on hearing results, effective February 1, 2013. The guidelines significantly improve on prior reporting recommendations made by the AAO-HNS Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium in 1995. For example, in the old guidelines it is cited, ‘‘a patient treated for an acoustic neuroma with a 51% word recognition score could be placed in the same class a patient with 100% word recognition score if both had pure tone averages between 30 and 50 dB hearing level (HL) (both class B).’’ The new standards provide a much more granular look at the data and make future comparisons for meta-analysis possible by including raw data along with a useful graphic display recommendation. Our new instructions to the authors include the following: For studies describing hearing levels, the journal requires that authors utilize the AAO-HNS minimal reporting standard for reporting audiometric data. While authors are welcome to interpret their data in any way they find interesting and informative, to facilitate comparison among studies, results must include the minimal data set in the standardized reporting format. To assist authors, a formatted Excel database template is available.
