concept becomes clearer when the financial ramifications of BCT are considered. For example, the recent acquisition of Acclarent Inc., by Ethicon, Inc., a Johnson and Johnson company, for approximately $785 million in an all-cash transaction, is roughly the same magnitude as the $941 million Medicare total allowed charges for all otolaryngology services in 2011. Substantial economic forces may be at play in this debate.
