A. The medial wall of the carotid artery demonstrates extensive disruption. Numerous polymorphonuclear leukocytes are present (inset). B. The elastic layer of the tunica media is extensively disrupted (asterisk) with focal transmural necrosis (arrow). The internal elastic lamina (arrowheads) is mostly preserved. D.
