Conclusions: Mucous membrane plasmacytosis is a rare, benign, plasma cell proliferative disorder with an unknown etiology. It is a diagnosis of exclusion as there are similar conditions such as extramedullary plasmacytoma which can affect the upper aerodigestive tract. The condition is generally of long standing duration and management is typically targeted at symptomatic relief. Mucous membrane plasmacytosis is an idiopathic disorder that can mimic other similar conditions of the upper aerodigestive tract. Diagnosis is made on the basis of exclusion using histology, serology and cultures to narrow the differential diagnosis.3 Table 1 illustrates the many other conditions of the upper aerodigestive tract that may appear similar clinically or histologically.
