Pheocromocytoma cell-3 (PC3TIS21/BTG2) is a member of the antiproliferative gene family that includes BTG1, PC3B, ANA/BTG3, Tob, and Tob2. Potential roles of PC3 have been suggested: transcriptional coregulator; differentiation factor in neurogenesis; key mediator of the stage-specific expansion of thymocyte; negative regulator of hematopoietic progenitor expansion; and tumor suppressor gene in both mice and humans1. Recent data demonstrated that PC3 induces the differentiation of neurons in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, PC3 potentiates NGF-induced differentiation of PC12 cells and protects neurons from apoptosis2. In vivo, PC3 overexpression in the cerebellum arrests proliferation and increases differentiation of the granule cell progenitors3. PC3 is probably a key gene in the control of the shift from proliferation to differentiation in the central nervous system.
