Methods: The medical records of patients undergoing radial forearm free flap reconstruction for head and neck surgical defects between 2006 and 2008 were reviewed (n = 103). Use of bipolar cautery and hemoclips for division of small perforating vessels (n = 53) was compared to ultrasonic energy (n = 52) free flap harvesting techniques. Conclusion: The harmonic scalpel is safe and feasible for radial forearm free flap harvest.
