The surgical route to the mastoid antrum is examined in its historical perspective. The contributions of an anatomist, Jacob Henle; a 19th century surgeon, MacEwen; and two 20th century surgeons, Jordan and Day, are discussed as examples of the many scientists and physicians who have contributed to the present state of the art in mastoid surgery.
