The UK government strongly encouraged the construction industry to improve its efficiency during the 1990s. P Trant Limited, a medium‐sized civil engineering contractor located in the south of England took on board this challenge and carried out a Business Process Re‐engineering programme. This paper describes the process modelling tools used, the re‐engineered processes and the efficiency gains produced. It is shown that mature medium‐sized contracting companies can benefit from undertaking such a change programme and that the benefits are not restricted to large companies or groups.
