The paper describes the progress of technical and market innovations surrounding video‐based information networks (VIN) tools, a central information and communication technology (ICT) tool for collaboration, and how these tools have become a strategic ICT solution for developing “knowledge communities” to give companies a competitive edge. These communities can develop within companies, between companies, and between companies and their customers. In addition, the paper describes how companies focus on creativity for the purpose of exploration and on speed and efficiency (and effectiveness) to promote knowledge creation through strategic communities using the video communications functions of VIN tools. This paper also clarifies how companies focus on speed and efficiency for the purpose of exploitation to drive knowledge utilization through communities of practice using other ICT tools in addition to video communications functions.
