The rate constant of the reaction of α‐pinene with atomic hydrogen was determined at 295 K using the fast‐flow reactor technique directly coupled to a mass spectrometric detection technique. The value was found to be equal to (9.8 ± 3.3) × 10 −13 cm 3 molecules −1 s −1 and independent of the helium pressure between 1 and 2 torr. The major reaction product formed is pinane showing that the stabilization of the adduct radical C 10 H   17 * , followed by a subsequent hydrogen atom addition step, is the important reaction route. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
