The stoichiometry of O 2 evolution in the Fe 3 catalyzed decomposition of H 2 O 2 in dilute HClO 4 at high [Fe 3+ ]/[H 2 O 2 ] ratios is 2H 2 O 2 → 2H 2 O + O 2 with no deficiency indicating accumulation of an intermediate complex. This and the observed kinetics are shown to be consistent with a “redox chain” but not a “complex” mechanism for the reaction.
