The kinetics of condensation between salicylaldehyde and diethylmalonate in a toluene solution in the presence of secondary amines (i.e., piperidine and 4‐piperidinopiperidine) as catalysts was investigated. It was found that the reaction proceeds via the Knoevenagel mechanism, and the kinetic model was numerically verified. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 41: 589–598, 2009
