Refugee trauma, as described by Joseph Westermeyer, M.D., is compared and contrasted with traumatization and victimization. Exposure to cruelty complicates the recovery process. Clinicians who treat Vietnam veterans are good candidates for training programs in cross‐cultural care of Asian refugees.
