The new subdiscipline of Humanitarian Work Psychology (HWP) is described, with specifics describing how HWP will improve voluntourism and aid delivery. Illustrating HWP explains how modern managerial enhancements will make online volunteerism, and subsequent on‐site voluntourism, more likely to be a positive experience for all stakeholders. Initial empirical efforts have focused on development and delivery of online assessments for future voluntourists. Initial results tentatively support continued use of panel ratings to guide construction of online assessments. Implications for future HWP development strategies are discussed.
