Tourism‐led growth hypothesis is widely studied from the international tourism perspective, but the number of studies related to domestic tourism is limited. This study provides an empirical investigation on the impacts of both international and domestic tourism on the economic growth of China, with human capital as a control variable. This study defines the presence of tourism‐led growth as the existence of a cointegrating relationship between international/domestic tourism and national income when national income is the dependent variable. The findings show that international tourism does not influence economic growth, but domestic tourism has an increasing positive impact on economic growth.
