This review paper highlights the use of clinically relevant intermediate‐sized animal models for the study of intervertebral disc‐associated back pain with an emphasis on the chondrodystrophic dog population. While making comparisons across species we review studies to date that have characterized this species as a model for studying the disc including studies that have assessed therapeutic strategies.
