Despite major advances in the management of the patient and in surgical and radiation therapy, cancer deaths continue to occur secondary to widespread metastases. Therefore, systemic treatments in the form of chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy are constantly being investigated, both as adjuvant to the local therapeutic modalities, as well as therapeutically for unresectable metastases. While the first two systemic modalities have established themselves in cancer management, immunotherapy has been lagging behind for several reasons.
