Plasma levels of calcitonin have been utilized as a tumor marker for medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. Elevated calcitonin levels have been noted with other tumors as well. The present case documents a marked decrease in calcitonin levels following therapy for breast carcinoma, supporting further evaluation of calcitonin as a clinically useful tumor marker for nonthyroid neoplasm.
