At a comprehensive cancer center, evaluation of the first year's experience with routine Pap smears offered to 6,851 nongynecological outpatients showed that after exempting those with a recent smear, medical contraindication or preference for their personal physician, 19.5% comprising the underscreened population, was given a smear on the current visit. This approach provided comprehensive access on a cost‐effective basis. Conceivably, primary care community hospitals could also offer routine smears to their underscreened outpatient population in a systematic manner to expand impact on public health.
