Using a simple standardized tissue culture technique, the effect of estradiol and progesterone on cell growth of various gynecological tissues in culture was assessed. The assessment was carried out in order to establish a semiquantitative method for predicting the hormone responsiveness of these tissues. Estradiol showed positive responses (stimulated growth) in the majority of endometrial and curretting explants, but had no effect on the malignant tumors. Progesterone stimulated the majority of endometrial explants, some of the currettings, and only a few of the tumor explants. These results agree with published data obtained by utilizing other methods for assessment of cell growth.
