Abstract A 31‐year‐old woman on oral contraceptives for three anda half years died of overwhelming sepsis. At autopsy, dilatation of the renal tubules and squamous metaplasia of the urinary bladder mucosa were found. These changes have been produced in animals with estrogen and estrogen‐progestogen medications but have not been previously reported in man. Published reports of the effects of these drugs on the urinary tract are reviewed and discussed.
