A sustained state of plethora cannot be induced in neonatal rats by intraperitoneal injections of RBC. On the other hand, erythropoiesis is markedly and rapidly suppressed by intra‐cardiac injections of RBC. The data suggest that administration of Ep to such animals results in a two‐fold action: an early release of reticulocytes followed by a true stimulation of erythropoiesis.
