Abstract A number of patients were interviewed a year or more after successful termination of treatment for head and neck cancer. Their levels of adaptation were assessed, and it was found that the majority of patients are able to make an excellent long term level of adaptation. However, a significant number of patients failed to assimilate the stresses produced by their malignancy, leading to various problems. A good understanding of the patient's needs and resources provides assistance in caring for them, and in promoting the best possible level of rehabilitation.
