Radiation therapy of basal or squamous cell carcinomas of the skin can be successful in most patients. This is true even in problem patients such as those with (1) lesions over 10 cm in greatest diameter, (2) lesions invading muscle, cartilage, or bone, (3) lesions in extremities, (4) lesions recurrent under surgical skin reconstruction, and (5) lesions in chronic radiodermatitis. The irradiation sources should be skillfully applied in customized fashion by clinicians trained in the radiotherapeutic aspects of skin cancer.
