A study of recovery efficiency of a series of volatile compounds trapped on reverse‐phase C 18 ‐bonded silica has shown that reverse‐phase silica is a useful addition to the existing range of adsorbents available for headspace volatile concentration and analysis. A gas chromatograph comparison of the airborne volatiles from black pepper ( Piper nigrum ) and banana pseudostem ( Musa sp) recovered from reverse‐phase silica, activated charcoal and Porapak Q traps shows no qualitative differences in the components present.
