A gas chromatographic method for the determination of medicagenic acid in alfalfa leaf protein concentrate is described. This method involved acid hydrolysis of medicagenins to release medicagenic acid, which was extracted from the hydrolysate and purified by column chromatography. After derivatisation to a dimethyl ester, di‐ (tri‐methyl silyl) ether the medicagenic acid was then quantified by gas chromatography. Recoveries of medicagenic acid added to alfalfa leaf protein concentrate after acid hydrolysis were quantitative.
