A method is described for the estimation of free lysine which depends on its reaction with excess dimethylaminonaphthalene sulphonyl (dans) chloride to form dans‐5‐aminovaleraldehyde. This product is extracted into toluene, separated by thin layer chromatography and estimated by fluorimetry. The mean recovery of lysine added to casein hydrolysate using this method was 99% (s.e. 4.3%).
