Extracts of culture filtrates of Fusarium sambucinum Fuckel, known to induce reddening in unripe strawberry fruits, were examined and found to contain fumaric acid, which induced premature reddening when applied to cavities made in the surface of strawberry receptacles. Reddening was also induced by various monophenols, auxins and fruit acids.
