A spectrophotometric method is described for estimations of benzoic and sorbic acids in materials with background absorption in the ultraviolet region. The estimation can be done when both preservatives are present in equal or nonequal ratios. The coefficients of variation (average standard deviation) are 0.23–1.98% for benzoic acid and 0.40–1.58% for sorbic acid. The recovery factors are 95.5–103% for benzoic acid and 81.5–89% for sorbic acid.
