The catalytic action of nitroprusside on the phenol hypochlorite reaction has been utilised to design a more sensitive automated technique for determining ammonium nitrogen in soil extracts. The method gives reproducible results in close agreement with manual methods. Sensitivity is such that as little as 0.1 parts/ million of N in solution can be determined without the use of recorder range expansion.
