In 1967, when an unusual number of disorders were present in apples grown in England, Cox's Orange Pippin apples with disorders at the time of picking or after storage were obtained from various sources and analysed for mineral constituents. The results were compared with those for sound apples, from similar or different samples. Low levels of calcium were found to be associated with many of the disorders. At these low levels of calcium, high concentrations of other elements appeared to be a contributory factor in rendering apples liable to particular disorders.
