The measurable depletion of the muscle of cod is preceded by a sharp decrease in the salt‐extractability of the actomyosin. The phenomenon is seen in cod caught in November, which are just beginning to build up the sexual products, and it can apparently be reproduced artificially by depriving cod of food in an aquarium at a time when the gonads are inactive, but then only with well‐fed cod completely restored after spawning. It will not occur twice in the same season if a brief starvation is separated from the next by a period of feeding. Its potential use for identifying the first stages of depletion is discussed.
