A method has been developed for the detection of coliform organisms in foodstuffs which is an alternative to the standard MacConkey test. A relationship has been established between the number of organisms originally present and the time required for their detection. The new method makes use of radioactive tracers and requires less time to confirm the presence of coliform contamination.
