Fingerprinting raspberry cultivars by empirical paper chromatography

Leaves of standard clones of three old‐established raspberry cultivars and four recent Malling ones have been examined by two‐way paper chromatography, the aim being to fingerprint them empirically by their flavonoid spots and spotting patterns which probably reflect their genotypes. There may be slight seasonal phenotypic affects on manifestations of the minor components. Only Lloyd George is readily distinguishable. An ‘identi‐key’ to the spotting components shows how to separate the four Malling cultivars, and a method is provided which demonstrates how to identify a suspected Malling cultivar. An affiity index is calculated to reveal the possible degree of relationship between any two cultivars. Two‐way flavonoid spotting is a useful adjunct to the morphological description of a raspberry cultivar in providing more critical indentification.
