A method is described which is suitable for the determination of nitrate in complex culture media. Nitrate is first precipitated as nitron nitrate and the precipitate reduced to ammonia by Devarda's alloy. The ammonia is distilled and determined colorimetrically by means of Nessler's reagent. Recoveries are in the range 98–102% for amounts of nitrate between 0.1 and 1.0 mg. per ml. of solution.
