After prolonged storage, samples of dry undamaged Proctor barley were found to suffer some reduction of germination after treatment with acid. This indicated some change in permeability of the testa. Acid treatment continued to differentiate between harvest treatments, the effects of moisture content of the grain at harvest, cylinder speed and concave clearance being reflected in germination after treatment with acid.
