When metham‐sodium is applied to soil it rapidly breaks down to methyl isothiocyanate which is both fungicidal and phytotoxic. It has been shown that certain metal ions influence the rate of this decomposition. The development of a method for the determination of small amounts of methyl isothiocyanate in soil is described. The method consists of measuring the infra‐red absorption at 4.7 μ of a carbon tetrachloride extract of the soil in a 5‐mm. cell. It is simple and rapid and capable of determining residues down to about I p.p.m. in the soil.
